When my brother, Andy, went away to college, he left me his fishing pole, a well-read copy of The Wind in the Willows, and a stack of Playboys. And that’s just like him. He knows I hate fishing, talking animal stories give me the creeps, and I don’t need the glossy reminders of my own shortcomings.

“You couldn’t leave me your stereo or your camera, something I could use?” I asked on the phone.
